[Book] Selected Paper on Computer Science

這本書是 K 老大眾多書本的其中之一，雖然書名是 Selected Paper (論文選輯)，但實際上裡頭有許多演講稿，讀起來並不吃力，我的感覺是這本書非常有趣，簡直可以稱之為 Computer Science 的科普書，我在小年夜那一天看到欲罷不能，一直看到凌晨三點才去睡覺。

這本書的精華部份是中間那四個演講稿: Theory and Practice (理論加實作)，K 老大在約 40 歲時，把他的心力放在開發 TeX （排版軟體）和 Metafont 這兩個軟體上，這四個演講稿談到他整個的心路歷程，由 K 老大講 Theory and Practice 這個題目再適合不過了；另外兩個同樣精采的文章是 Coping with Finiteness 和 Are Toy Problems Useful? 在看 Coping with Finiteness 這篇時，我剛好在寫大數運算的程式，所以特別有感覺，而 Are Toy Problems Useful 這一篇則和我作的研究有點關連，我是做理論的，有時候會被問「這東西有什麼應用嗎？」所以看到 Toy Problem 這個詞心裡就特別有感覺（只有時間才能証明一個問題是不是 Toy Problem, 但做基礎研究的人要在當下就說服別人自己做的東西是有用的）。

天才都是練出來的

學 Computer 的知道 K 老大的成就，除了他本身有極高的天資以外，更重要的是他比別人努力十倍，TeX 開發時間長達十二年，而且，他是先在紙上 Debug TeX, 程式碼多達 500 頁；因為太投入於開發排版軟體上，他去餐廳吃飯時，會下意識地研究菜單上的字型；有時候還得被迫放下研究，去做一些正常人應該要做的事。

書中提到的另外一個天才是數學家 Gauss(高斯），高斯比較為人知的故事是老師叫他計算 1 加到 100，結果他三兩下就算出答案了；這故事告訴我們高斯的天資極高，事實上，高斯也是很努力的人，在書中的 Theory and Practice IV，Knuth 告訴我們高斯留下了數千頁的計算紙，上面都是詳細的計算式。有多少人有寫超過 1000 頁的計算紙？應該不多。

底下是書中的一些雜記, 有點 technical 的沒列出來。

• ``What can be automated?'' is one of the most inspiring philosophical and practical questions of contemporary civilization.
• ...the study of algorithms themselves has opened up a fertile vein of interesting new mathematicalproblems; it provides a breath of life for many areas of mathematics that had been suffering from a lack of new ideas.

  這真是講出了一些無奈的情況啊；講白話一點，人生在世，不過是混口飯吃吃的，研究人員也不例外，當可以做的題目越來越少時，帳面上的績效數字（像是 paper 點數等等）就會越來越難看，連帶的就會被質疑。

• Theory is to practice as rigor to vigor.
• Critics had been taunting him(Thales 泰勒斯)， saying ``If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?''
• Archimedes(阿基米德) found that after applying his theoretical knowledge to practical problems, he obtained new intuitions that led to substaintially better theories.
• To be learned in an art, the Thoery is sufficient; to be a master of it, both the Theory and practice are requisite.
• During the 1960s I became disenchanted with the way mathematics was going.
• Computer scientists have discovered a better way to enjoy themselves... so it is distressing for them to see people wasting their time with lesser amusements.

  不只是 computer scientists, 這用在其他的地方也一樣，像是聽古典樂的會覺得流行樂不夠高雅等等。
